Seeds of Inquiry: Using Short Texts to Enhance Student Understanding of Social Studies
Stories are cognitively privileged, more likely to be remembered, and invite students into the content of primary sources. Stories generate a natural curiosity for reading and can be leveraged as a framework for inquiry. Beginning Inquiry: Engaging Learners' Curiosity through Texts
What adolescent students find interesting leads them to wonder. Students relish a good story, particularly in the social studies. Stories that evoke interest facilitate the natural development of questions. Teachers can leverage learner's curiosity as an invitation into texts and use short texts to initiate inquiry. This workshop provides examples of short texts and methods that facilitate inquiry in social studies. Participants will receive a collection of short texts and instructional methods for scaffolding inquiry.
