Participants will explore and construct a number of creative assessments that can be used in the science classroom. These assessments will help the teacher to know more than just if the student knows a concept or not; it will show the teacher what that child’s level of understanding of the concept is. Participants will also explore what type of data is useful and how to analyze and track it to best reach and grow all students in the 5th grade science classroom.
Teachers will share information on updates to the resources, pacing and common assessments for this specific course. Required for all teachers in that grade/content area.
How to help educators develop digital scientific practices in the science classroom. Digital media tools and resources are increasingly integral to engaging in scientific practices. These tools and supports are needed for learners to engage in practices, such as analyzing and interpreting data, modeling, and other relevant skills in science.

Use of Gizmos simulations provides a progression of inquiry that helps to develop students’ scientific inquiry skills. Start the school year with a new perspective on using inquiry methods of instruction, which encourage students to ask questions, make observations, and construct reasonable explanations.
What does an inquiry based science lesson look like? Come experience this through the eyes of your students to better understand why this structure is so important. Then use what you have learned to implement it into your classroom!
In this session we will review Explore Learning's Gizmo activities. The basics will be covered, but we will also dive deeper and explore how to customize lessons to help meet the needs of your learners, and how to align these lessons with GRR and EmpowerED frameworks. Bring questions or advice for beginners as we work together to enhance our usage of this awesome tool for teachers and students!
Learn new ways to integrate Gizmos into your Union Co Science curriculum and classrooms, to customize the lesson materials, and to discover effective uses of Gizmos in whole group and small group instruction. A review of major and new website features and Gizmos will be infused throughout the workshop.
New to Gizmos? This session provides introductory instruction and hands-on practice with Gizmos. Learn the major features and functions of the ExploreLearning Gizmos website. Walk away with everything you need to start the school year using Gizmos simulations and best teaching practices to support your Science instruction.
Experience how Gizmos can be used to create and support thematic units of study in your Science classroom. Design your unit for deeper understanding using phenomena in the world around your students. Example Topics: Upcoming Lunar Eclipse, Climate Change, etc.
