In Book love: Developing depth, stamina, and passion in adolescent readers (2013), Penny Kittle explores the various reason adolescent students do not read and shows the effects of decreased reading quantities. Kittle (2013) argues, through providing appropriate texts, along with structured class time, teachers can create a culture that leads to more complex reading. She provides strategies to increase the quantity, capacity, and complexity over time, to create a balance of independent reading, text study, and novel study, to help students deepen their thinking through writing about reading, and to build a school culture focused on the love of reading (2013). Book Love (2013) advocates for independent reading; the ultimate goal is to clearly establish a culture where students long to read all types of literature, thus use literature as an avenue of growth and reflection. We will share how the Book Love Initiative works in my classroom, along with data supporting its effectiveness.

In this session I will define and illustrate what impactful teaching is: instruction that leads to positive, measurable, lasting and immediate change in students. I will provide illustrations of what this looks like in the classroom. I will offer self-reflecting questions that help guide instructional decisions. This session will outline and describe the conditions of learning necessary for impactful teaching to occur: 1. Learner must know where they are in relation to the learning target. (Where am I?) 2. Student buy in (Why should I change?) 3. The steps to reach the goal. (How do I get there?)
Finally, I will share specific, tested techniques that teachers can immediately implement in their classrooms that support impactful instruction. This will include artifacts from Rock Rest classrooms- rubrics, data collection forms, feedback templates, student checklists, learning trajectory graphs and anchor charts.

Teachers will learn how to create a PBL project by integrating SS, R, and W standards. We will be showing an example of a project that we implemented in our classrooms called Shark Tank. This is an opportunity for students to enhance their curiosity, creativity, and passion for developing an innovation or invention. First, students conduct research about a city located in the United States (or global city), which aligns with informational reading and writing. Then, students use their research to inspire and guide them to create their own innovation or invention that would successfully thrive in their selected city. Students will persuade a panel of "Shark Tank" judges to "invest" in their product. Included in their final presentation, students are required to write a persuasive speech and create a model. This is where their creativity comes to play! This is a great opportunity for all students to shine in front of their classmates.
We will be giving teachers different resources that we used; such as parent letters, leveled reading resources, suggested layout and format, invitations, rubrics, possible lessons, google slides and student packet.
